WATFORD GYMNASTICS

THE BRIEF
Nickie O'Sullivan contacted me about developing a new logo for her gymnastics club, and in doing so sent me the most wonderful back story about her and her husband Graham’s business.

The Watford Gymnastics ethos is this; children first, gymnastics second. They noticed that other gymnastics clubs often had an environment that put undue pressure on children. Nickie and her team focus on community, creating a fun environment and inclusivity. No child would ever be told off for making a mistake.

Their new brand would encompass a huge target audience. Obviously children from all ages, but also their parents and grandparents who would bring them to classes.

THE SOLUTION
I had so much fun on this project. Developing a concept that revolved around creating a safe space for kids, and yet wasn’t too ‘playschool’ in nature was actually quite tough. But during my sketching phase, the gymnastics rings as eyes was something that developed really quickly into an idea.

Combined with a gender-neutral gradient, and a chalk bowl for a smile, the result is a deeply playful logo mark, which removes itself from the serious, elitist direction a lot of other gymnastics clubs take.

TESTIMONIAL
”Handing over control of our brand to someone who knows nothing about us and what we do was very daunting. Having someone from 'the outside' create something that we were going to use as our identity felt strange. However, James was amazing. He put us at ease and really dug deep to work out who we were, what we wanted our branding to convey and what was important to us. Opening the first drafts was nerve wracking, but as soon as we saw them we were delighted. He 'got us' absolutely spot on!

Throughout the process the communication from James has been professional, prompt and super informative.

We finally feel we have a brand and logo that does help define us and portrays the exact message we want; Gymnastics with a smile.

Thank you so much James.”
