Sykom

THE BRIEF
Aarati Asundi runs the science communications startup Sykom out of San Francisco. She specialises in making illustrated or whiteboard explainer videos for tech companies, academic researchers, and non-profits. Sykom helps bridge the gap between scientists/tech entrepreneurs and a targeted audience. The company name is a variant spelling of scicomm (short for science communication).

Aarati needed to rebrand in order to be able to include more scientific sectors like biology, healthcare and deeptech into her clientele.

THE SOLUTION
Skyom’s new logo needed to appeal to a specific science/tech-related audience, and yet not isolate the style into one specific field. So using concepts like the atom (physics), or a test tube (chemistry) would not only be clichéd, but would also exclude other scientific or technology fields. Aarati wanted to try and be inclusive of all fields by using an abstract concept. She just wasn’t clear on what that concept would be.

After a lot of conceptual work, I ended up using a design that combined an iconised treatment of a lecture hall with the symbol for a radio signal, to form the ‘O’ shape of the word ‘SYKOM’. These two concepts represent the explanation video element of the business (conveying knowledge and teaching an audience) with the communication side.
